Cassatt and the Orient: Japan’s Influence on Printmaking October 5, 2011 | January 15, 2012
Japonisme soon impacted French printmaking. While Félix Bracquemond was one of the first French artists to incorporate Japanese motifs in his etchings in 1856, the great catalyst behind Japonisme was the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878. This exhibition included many examples of Japanese woodblock prints and inspired French and American artists like Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
