    The McNay Art Museum Library is located on two levels of the Main Collection Galleries.

     Lower Level (below the Tobin Theatre Arts Gallery)- information desk, reference, general fine arts collection,
    periodicals, special collections, and the offices of the library and archives.

    Upper Level (Tobin Theatre Arts Gallery) - dance, music, opera, theater architecture,
    gardens, theatrical design, and festivals.

    Frequently Asked Questions


    Who may use the McNay Art Museum Library? The library is open to the museum visitor during the library’s public hours.


    May I check out books? Library materials do not circulate to the public.


    Is the library’s catalog available online? Presently access to the catalog is only available in the library.


    Do you have a photocopy machine? Yes. Black and white copies are 10¢a sheet and color copies are 25¢a sheet.


    Will I find information about all of the works of art in the McNay’s collection? The library collection offers information on many of the McNay’s works of art, however not every museum object is documented in the library.


    How can I find information about the work of art I own? The library staff is available to assist you in your research. Information that will be helpful in this type of research includes the name of the artist, title of the art work, date, medium, dimensions, and provenance (source of the work of art). If you have a photograph of your art work please bring it with you.


    How may I support the McNay Art Museum Library? The library gratefully accepts cash donations in honor of, or in memory of a friend, or family member. The funds are used to purchase books on the Library’s Wish List. A bookplate will be placed in the book designating the donor and the honoree. An acknowledgment will be mailed to the donor and the honoree or their family. If you wish to make a donation, please call 805-1728. Your generous gift in support of the library helps to preserve these vast volumes and records, and ensures that they remain available for scholarly research in the years to come.

     Does the library accept donated books? The library accepts books if they fall within the guidelines of the library’s collection development policy. In order to determine if the proposed book fits our collection, we request in advance a list of your books that contain the following information: author, title, publisher and year of publication.
